Cast: Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap
Director: Vikramaditya Motwane
Here comes another breathtaking movie from the director of Bhavesh Joshi, Trapped and Sacred Games. Vikramaditya Motwane’s latest Netflix original release AK vs AK proves that the director is here to stay. And mind you when I say ‘breathtaking’, you might just be holding your breath through most of the movie!
AK vs AK is a crazy roller coaster of a movie. It is justly a meta-fiction. A story outside a story, a movie beyond a movie. The two AKs in the movie are actor Anil Kapoor and director Anurag Kashyap, both playing themselves or rather exaggerated versions of themselves. This is one movie that will make you rethink the very over-used phrase ‘the story is the real hero.’ It will make you stop and reflect, is the story the hero, are the actors the hero, and do our favourite movie starts actually ever stop acting even when the camera is down? It’s all just a crazy mixture of real and reel.
So, the movie basically begins with a spat between the AK junior Kashyap, the brash, outspoken, director of dark-matter movies and AK senior Kapoor, the still in demand, once superstar on the sets of a live TV show. No one can become a star overnight unless your surname is Kapoor, Anurag’s comment further ignites the tension between the two and things go out of hand when Anurag splashes a glass of water on Anil’s face, on live TV! That’s when the movie kick starts. We viewers usually assume that such drama on-screen is all scripted. So was this. Or, was it?
Director Vikramaditya has shown some real guts in exposing Bollywood the way he did. Isn’t this how we look at B-town, shiny on the outside and dark behind? The movie has an initial twist when Anurag kidnaps Anil Kapoor’s actress daughter Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and forces the actor to find his daughter within 24 hours and shoots his search in real time. That’s his idea of a revenge-movie! WE are bound to believe that Anurag needs to be some special kind of nuts to do something of this extent! Are they really that capable! But, well, the story has another major twist at the end. Basically anything said about the movie will be a plot spill. So we’ll keep the suspense intact for the viewers.
Coming to acting, Anil Kapoor is as brilliant as ever. He forces us to see another side of the star Anil Kapoor we know through his acting. Even amidst a father’s grueling search for his kidnapped daughter, he breaks into a dance on stage. The change in his entire body language from joy to distress in minutes is something you will watch in awe. There are too many of such moments of Anil’s acting to be praised. But one thing is for sure. We would love to see Anurag Kashyap act in more movies!
Just a little glitch, the movie could have been a bit crisper. Some parts tend to drag on and we wish the director(s?) would have yelled ‘cut’ faster!
All in all, AK vs AK is a fresh, new, daring thought and a super enjoyable movie to watch.
